Oh Baby/Irish Knots, Streaker Win 35th Annual Niagara Pro-Am
By Bill Hilts, Jr.

The 35th Annual Skip Hartman Memorial Niagara County Lake Ontario Pro-Am Salmon Team Tournament was held May 31 and June 1 out of the ports of Wilson and Olcott. The weather was near perfect, the fishing was very good, and it all came down to the wire in determining who the winners were when salmon and trout were weighed in at Krull Park in Olcott. After the final basket was put on the scales, it was a pair of anglers named Matt that won the first-place prizes.

Oh Baby/Irish Knots, a team lead by Matt LeClair of Plattsburgh, took top honors in the Professional Division with a score of 514.09 points for two days of fishing (based on 10 points per fish and a point per pound). They won a check for $11,000. Meanwhile, it was the Streaker team led by Matt Dunn of Newfane setting the pace in the Amateur Class with 265.56 points and earning a check for $2,000.

The team of Matt LeClair, Capt. Chris Yard of Pompey (Irish Knots), and Matt and Sarah Hill of Sherbourne came in with a tournament limit of 12 fish both days of the contest. However, there were 20 other teams who came in with a tournament limit, too. The key would be who could find the bigger fish. After the first day, LeClair and company were in Sixth Place with a score of 246.17 points. Leading the way was Vision Quest and Capt. Pete Alex with a score of 268.22 points. Big fish for the day in the Pros was a 21.22-pound king salmon caught by Capt. Jerry Felluca and Runnin’ Rebel/Legacy.

The second day, the Oh Baby/Irish Knots crew managed to score 267.92 points and move into the top slot overall. Second place in the Pro Division was Runnin’ Rebel/Legacy with a score of 506.96 points. They were in second place after the first day, too. They won $6,000 for their efforts. Third place went to Finders Keepers led by Tim Thomas of Ontario with a score of 502.54 points. They won $5,000. Fourth place was Vision Quest with a score of 496.45 points, winning $4,000. Fifth place was Fish Chopper led by Capt. Kevin Keller of Marietta with 487.53 points. They earned a check for $3,000. A total of 21 boats caught the 12 fish limit in the Pro Division on Day 2 as well. Big Fish for the day was Capt. Tom Pearse of Grand Island with the Summer School Team, a 20.71-pound king salmon. Both big fish prizes earned $250.

In the Amateur Division, the Streaker team didn’t have an easy time of it. All 19 amateur teams caught the 5-fish limit for the tournament on the first day, 17 on the second day. However, they had something going for them that the other teams didn’t – two father-son duos working together for a common goal. Matt Dunn was fishing with his father Marc (of Pendleton) and Doug Parker Jr. of Wilson had his father Doug Sr. from Lockport on board.

“Having the father and son action going for use made it really special,” said Matt Dunn. “The dads did great, too!”

Streaker was in second place after the first day with a score of 130.84 points behind Fishin’ Physician Assistant and Robert DeBadts with a score of 137.46 points. However, the Dunn’s and Parker’s went back to the same spot they hit the big fish on Day 1 and they connected on them early. They brought in a slightly bigger catch to take the top spot.

Just 3 points behind was Reel Eyes and Eric Herrold of Julian, Pa. with a score of 262.49 points. They were in 6th place after the first day with a score of 127.03 points. They earned a check for $1,500. Third place was Thunder Struck and Jason Nowak of Bloomfield with 259.49 points ($1,000). Fourth place was Wayne Culverwell of Ransomville and his “All In” team with 256.35 points ($500). Fifth place was Hound Dog and James Spinelli of Wellsville with 252.33 points ($250).

Big fish day one in Amateur Class was the Fishin’ Physician Assistant team with a 21.67-pound king salmon. Day 2 winner was Ballz Deep and Adam Austin of Gasport with a 21.31-pound king. Both earned $250 for their big fish titles.

The Wet Net team, led by Capt. Matt Yablonsky of Youngstown, came from behind under some difficult
conditions to win the Pro Division of the 34 th Annual Lake Ontario Pro-Am Salmon Team Tournament out
of Niagara County June 1-2. James Spinelli and the Hound Dog team from Wellsville swept the Amateur
Open class when they won the Saturday contest after winning the Friday competition.

In the Pro Division, it was back to old school as tournament director Penny Lyman moved the
tournament back to the first weekend in June and instituted a “no communication” clause for the 24
professional teams competing for $30,000 in prize money. After a near perfect day that left the Wet Net
team in fourth place with a score of 213.32 points (based on 10 points per fish and a point per pound),
Lake Ontario kicked up a bit and forced teams to deal with more difficult conditions.

Yablonsky and his team of Mike Berry, Jim Dolly, Jr. and Matt’s wife Christin came in with the best score
of the day, bring a 12-fish tournament limit to the scales for the second day in a row and score 231.21
points. Their two-day total was 444.53 points, good enough for the $11,000 check. They narrowly beat
out Yankee Troller and Capt. Richard Hajecki of Rochester with a score of 441.57 points. Second place
won $6,000.

Rounding out the top five Pros were Vision Quest and Capt. Pete Alex of North East, Penn. with 420.19
points ($5,000), Shark Tank and Capt. Greg Gehrig of Oswego with 405.81 points ($4,000), and Screamer
A-Tom-Mik and Dave Antenori of Clarks Summit, Penn. with a score of 404.94 points ($3,000). Big fish
and a check for $250 in honor of the late Tom and Ethel Letcher was the Summer School team led by
Capt. Tom Pearse of Grand Island with an 18.34 pound king salmon.

In the Amateur Open Division, each day was a separate contest. The Hound Dog team led by James
Spinelli of Wellsville won both days for the best three fish totals. Also on the team were Jeremy
Beckwith and Brians Insley, both of Wellsville. After winning the first day with a score of 79.87 points
($900) and a big fish of the day at 22 pounds ($250), they duplicated the 3-fish win with a score 57.97
points ($900). They also had the best two day total among the amateurs, giving them the Amateur Cup,
a check for $500 and a Raymarine Dragonfly 7 unit. The only thing that they didn’t win was Big Fish for
the second day. American Dream led by Rick O’Hara of Ransomville earned those honors with a 12.90
pound king. There were 19 teams in the Amateur Open Division each day.

Niagara County’s Lake Ontario Pro-Am Salmon Team Tournament was the event that started the tournament craze on the lake 33 years ago. June 1-3 are the dates that are set for this year’s contest, held annually out of the ports of Wilson and Olcott. It should be bigger and better than ever this year.

Penny Lyman (Hartman), daughter of the tournament’s namesake – it’s called the Walter “Skip” Hartman Memorial Pro-Am Tournament – is going to be changing things up a little bit, going back to the way things were for the Professional Division. The tournament returned to a straight 12 fish contest each day last year (based on 10 points per fish and a point per pound under special tournament guidelines) and an observer from another team is on board to verify the catch.

The tournament will be returning back to a June timeframe and if the weather cooperates, the fishing dates will be June 1 and 2. If there is a bad weather day, June 3 will be utilized. “We are also going back to closed communications in 2018,” said Hartman, the tournament director. It’s been Open Communications for over a decade.

Also new this year is the fact that the tournament will be aligning with the Lake Ontario Championship Series. You can find out more information about that at http://www.greatlakesspecialevents.com/index.html. In addition, the tournament website for other information is www.lakeontarioproam.net. Last year, more than $50,000 in cash and prizes were handed out, making it one of the few tournaments that offers anglers more than 100 percent back from your entry fee money.

If you’d rather not fish with the big boys but still enjoy a competitive atmosphere, there is an Amateur Open Division that does not have a starting time stipulation, does not require observers and is simply a “best three” for the day. Each day is treated as a separate event and a special cup and check will be given to the team with the best two days combined. It’s a great way of getting started in the tournament fishing scene.

The Screamer team led by Dave Antenori of Pennsylvania was on a mission. After placing second in the Wilson Harbor Invitational the weekend before, they wanted to take the first place prize in the Niagara County/Lake Ontario Pro-Am Salmon Team Tournament held May 19-21 out of the ports of Wilson and Olcott. After catching a 12-fish tournament limit the first day, he was poised to be in a perfect position as he sat in second place – behind Team Maverick and Capt. Chris LoPresti. After a blow day on Saturday, it was all business on Sunday as they boated another limit and won the Niagara County version of the Pro-Am and the $15,000 prize with a score of 471.02 points (10 points per fish and a point per pound). Second place was Maverick led by Capt. Chris LoPresti, taking home a check for $7,500 with a score of 448.59 points. Third place went to Dirty Goose/Cold Steel led by Capt. Casey Prisco ($5,000) with 447.79 points, followed by Vision Quest and Capt. Pete Alex ($2,500) with 429.84 points. Big fish for the tournament was a 24.04 pound king salmon caught by Thrillseeker led by Capt. Vince Pierleoni. He won $300 plus a new Raymarine Axiom Unit.

In the Amateur Division, it was Mother Moose winning the $500 prize and a special Cup for the three day event. Anonymous, last year’s cup winner led by John Muehl, won the Day 3 contest for the amateur open but it wasn’t enough to repeat. Big fish for the day was Dipsy Ranger with a king salmon weighing 19.23 pounds. In the Amateur Open, each day was a separate contest. Day one winner was Dipsy Ranger led by John Nevlezer. Day two winner (by drawing due to inclement weather) was HK1 and Chris Petrucci. Big fish prizes, good for $500 and an ITO Flies prize package were: Day one – Mean Machine and Kyle Hovak with a 19.43 pound king salmon; Day two (drawing) – Streaker and Matt Dunn; Day three – Dipsy Ranger with a 19.23 pound king salmon.
